August 4, 2026, marks a pivotal moment for higher education in Ethiopia. Leveling up higher education through innovation, a four-day Practical VR Training has officially launched at Dire Dawa University as part of the EU- and Erasmus+-co-funded MaDE-for-UASs project.
The initiative addresses a critical need: Ethiopian Universities of Applied Sciences must produce a skilled, technologically adept workforce capable of solving real-world societal problems. To achieve this, empowering lecturers with advanced pedagogic and technology skills is essential.
During the opening sessions, Project Coordinator Dr. Ephrem Tekle (Kotebe University of Education) emphasized how MaDE-for-UASs bridges the gap between industry and the classroom. He also expressed deep appreciation to Guzo Technologies for their remarkable commitment to covering all costs incurred for delivering the training.
Adding to the vision, DDU President Dr. Ubah Ahmed delivered an inspiring opening speech, highlighting the power of tech-driven collaboration. She noted that the immersive sessions will enable participants to learn from experienced trainers, make their course delivery more innovative, and ultimately ensure students benefit from transformative, experiential learning.
As a three-year international initiative bridging Ethiopia and Europe, MaDE-for-UASs is hoped to bring industry experience straight to the classroom through Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR). SMU is among the institutions in the consortium implementing this valuable project. MaDE-for-UASs is co-funded by the EU, Erasmus+ Program.
