On February 2, 2026, St. Mary’s University (SMU), Ethiopia, and KCA University (KCAU), Kenya, entered into a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signaling a new era of “South-South” academic collaboration.
The SMU delegation, led by President Dr. Wondwosen Tamrat, was received with high honors by the KCAU top management and Senate. The ceremony, which began with the national anthems of both Ethiopia and Kenya, highlighted a mutual commitment to regional academic excellence.

While the MoU outlines seven strategic areas of cooperation, the priority is set on faculty capacity building. Notably, KCAU will provide PhD training to SMU staff, ensuring the long-term growth of academic leadership in the region.

Prof. Joshua Bagaka’s, DVC of Academic and Student Affairs, opened the session by describing the institutions as “like-minded” and committed to quality. This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Wondwosen Tamrat, who noted that this partnership serves as an “exemplary initiative for Africa.”

Prof. Isaiah I.C. Wakindiki, Vice Chancellor and CEO of KCAU, joined Dr. Wondwosen in the formal signing, emphasizing that this mutually beneficial interest will demonstrate the power of intra-African institutional support. The event concluded with a comprehensive campus tour and divisional briefings.
