The College of Distance Learning (CODL), in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Research, Community Engagement and Communication (OVPRCEC), conducted  one-day training on Research Basics on March 5, 2026, at the Main Campus Syndicate Room.   Led by Teshale Teshome (PhD), the program combined theoretical grounding with practical exercises, aiming to strengthen the skills of the CODL staff.

The morning session focused on strengthening the structure of research and academic writing. Dr. Teshale Teshome  underscored the key components of a thesis, dissertation, or research article, stressing the importance of rigor and publication quality. Participants   examined research as a systematic and scientific process, highlighting its evidence-based, objective, replicable, transparent, and ethical nature. The session also covered introductions, literature reviews, and conceptual frameworks, with emphasis on identifying gaps and shaping conclusions into practical insights.

In the afternoon, the training turned to practical applications, showing participants how to use IBM SPSS, Taguette, and AI for research data analysis. They practiced importing and cleaning datasets, running reliability tests, applying parametric statistics, organizing qualitative themes, and using AI for validation with human oversight.

The training concluded with key takeaways that reinforced the importance of data quality, the careful selection of statistical tests, and the integration of multiple analytical approaches. By blending traditional research methods with modern technological tools, the workshop empowered participants to elevate their research practices and contribute to academic excellence.
