St. Mary’s University celebrated the Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and Peoples day on Friday, December 2, 2016. The event was the 7th at campus level, and is to be celebrated at national level for the 11th time in the Harari Regional State on Hidar 29, 2009 E.C. This year’s event is being celebrated nation-wide under the motto “Higemengistachin Ledeimocraciawi Andinetachinina Lehidasiachin.”

In the morning session, at the undergraduate campus Multi-purpose Hall, a paper titled “ Ethiopian Constitution and Private Higher Education in Ethiopia” was presented “by Ato Seifu Hailu, in collaboration with Ato Abas Ahmed; both lecturers from the Department of Basic Courses. Students and staff attended the presentation, which was followed by a lively discussion. Students raised so many questions directed at the resource persons at the podium. Even so, responses of policy significance were also given by participants who had adequate knowledge on the matter.

The panel discussion ended at 12:00 noon and the ceremony organized by the Student Union and the Student Support and Services Office started at 1:30 PM in the afternoon. This was an open air event held annually to honor the Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Day. Students, dressed with costumes of diverse Ethiopian nationalities, displayed folk dances that represent the various nations and nationalities in the country.
